I Can’t Date Jesus is an enchanting autobiographical story about the life of a black gay man from Houston, Texas. Arceneaux confronts issues such as HIV, religion, discrimination in the workplace, domestic violence, love and sex as a gay man and rejection. All these difficult topics are spoken about in such a raw and honest manner by Arceneaux, which is part of the book’s charm. Moreover, he is absolutely hilarious. I cannot emphasise enough how many times I caught myself laughing out loud on public transport and walking around London! It was embarrassing. Also, I bought the audiobook which made it even more personal and felt as though I was listening to a friend tell me about his life.
I initially picked this book up because the title made me laugh and the subtitle “Love, Sex, Family, Race and Other Reasons I’ve Put My Faith in Beyoncé” really spoke to me. I am also a devout Beyoncé fan and condemn Beytheism. I definitely did not regret buying this book and I highly recommend it.
