I laughed and I cried more often than I would have thought in this short novel! Ephron is truly hilarious in her way of recounting her equally hysterical and tragic story. It is all based on real stories about her and her friend’s lives – which makes it so much better – and it begins with how her husband is having an affair, whilst she is 7 months pregnant with their second child. However depressing that may sound, Ephron’s humour makes light of such a serious situation. Also, due to the fact that it is based on true stories, it makes every emotion that much more resonant. Without being reminded that what happens in the book is actually real, it would be easy to forget because the events are often so surreal.
I loved Ephron’s style of writing and the way she structured her storytelling because I felt totally immersed in her world! This book is definitely worth reading. It is a great way to make an awful situation into something bearable…almost positive! If you need a good laugh, this is definitely the book for you.
