After reading this book I can definitely say that I have gotten to know Jamaicans and Jamaican culture a whole lot better! I really enjoyed reading this collection of short stories written by Alexis Arthurs for a number of reasons:
1. Each story is so different, with different characters and different backgrounds. The only common characteristic is that they are Jamaican. I thought it was fascinating to read because I felt like I was entering the head of a new person each time, which allowed me to get a deeper and better picture of what Jamaican people are really like.
2. It is a really easy book to just pick up whenever you have time due to the short stories, which are hardly even connected.
3. The book shows just how great of an author Arthurs. Each story is so unique and wonderfully told. In each short story you are able to connect with these characters as if you had been reading a 300 page novel. I kept wanting to know more about each story, which I think is a positive.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone because it really is a beautiful book full of incredible characters with equally incredible stories. It is also impossible to choose a favourite story because they each have different strengths that I struggle ranking in any specific order. I can’t emphasise enough how much I enjoyed reading this book!
